in 2000, a fun picture from my days in Kazakhstan as my friend Vanessa and I climbed up on the only sitting Lenin statue that we ever saw in Kazakhstan near the village of Talgar (or ever heard about).

back then, there was some discussion about taking down the statues in the various cities and towns as all the stalin statues had come down. however, later that year in the city of Karaganda where I was living, the city tried to take down the very large bust of lenin in the city square and a large number of older folks and war veterans came out and protested and the lenin statue stayed.

well thankfully, the soviet union had collapsed 9 years prior to this picture and we took the picture well out of sight from any old soviet loyalist babushkas - have you ever seen a babushka flip out? it's mighty impressive. and as far as i know, buddhism is still a pretty important religion to loads of people...

yikes, being sent to a Kazakh gulag! not a pretty thought! actually what probably would have happened is that policeman would have threatened to bring us into the jail, searched our things looking for bigger sorts of contraband (i.e. drugs) and then ask for us to pay the "fine" of the convenient amount of money that we had on our persons. funny enough, the only problems i ever had with safety and security there was with the police...
